Thank you to RE:Charge for giving me the wonderful opportunity to perform this at Open Deck Night! They ran a wonderful event filled with incredibly talented DJs and artist vendors.

RE:Charge runs events at Summit Music Hall on Thursday nights. They and their guests are all exceptionally talented!

The vendors were also really interesting!

I bought a t-shirt from Mad-E Zwiebel (@shabby_beatnik), a local tattoo artist. You two at the table were really nice!

It was so much fun seeing everyone’s reaction to me pulling out a chair and some sunglasses to drive the room around!

F**k Cancer

The event was a charity for Adam Frances, someone close to RE:CHARGE who was recently diagnosed with cancer. That sucks! Every beat I dropped was for him!

Goals for Next Time

• Figure out why I couldn’t scratch. hmm…
• Investigate why I can’t monitor the audio through my headphones via master cue. I can only cue with each channel. That’s helpful, but I can’t hear the ‘silence’ that way. That’s really helpful for monitoring scratching or balance between tracks.
• Actually remember to use the cue point cuts I set up to shorten tracks. I spent too much time fighting the CDJs and missed them all!
• Remember what master cue does so that Miku doesn’t sing out of tune 🙁
• Remember how to turn off the sync mode from the last DJ

More About This Mix

Inspiration

I wanted to make something with a ‘silly Japanese’ feel; something evoking those old MLG montage videos. They’re so awesome and goofy, and I feel like j-core is an evolution of the classic, memey dubstep those videos always featured.

Baby Driver

As Sonic Warrior, I was DJing a dance for elementary school kids a few years ago and I invited my mom to help me with something: I put on the Turbo remix of GOODRUSH and we pulled out two chairs. I put on some sunglasses and pretended that I was driving a car with an imaginary steering wheel. When the drop hits, mom and I start pretending we’re in a street race and being rocked around by the inertia. She’d look like she was freaking out, and I’d be calm and cool like Baby Driver lol

Cue Point Cuts

In this mix I’ve started to learn how to better control the duration of the mix using cue point cuts. If I’m careful and in time, I can cut from one portion of a song to another to shorten it without it sounding too disruptive to the listener. My hope is I can use this to better prepare myself for the unpredictable set times of open deck nights.

Challenges and Room for Improvement

Developing this playlist was a bit of a struggle because there are some wide ranging BPMs that I can get stuck on with transitions. A lot of these songs are also incredibly dense; it can be difficult to blend them into each other because so much is going on at once.

I need to focus on transitioning songs out in a way that isn’t disruptive to the new track. I’ve noticed when listening to my recordings that I have a bad habit of not controlling the volume of the track I’m mixing out of well enough, where it can disrupt the song I’m trying to transition to. This is especially problematic because I don’t do a lot of harmonic mixing yet.

Closer

The set is supposed to end with Shiny Kung Fu Revival. My dream is to roll out one of those big Taiko no Tatsujin drums. I’d then give the audience drumsticks to use on the railing, and we’d finish out the set together drumming!
