More About This Mix
I threw together Got Milk to perform at Re:Charge’s open deck night at Summit Music Hall. I was in a j-core hyperfixation at the time, so I wanted to play that, but I knew that if I was going to do that, I’d have to earn it by playing something that people would be more familiar with. Fortunately, I also really like drum and bass, and I had plenty of material to work with.
The energy gradually increases through the whole set. The DnB section’s climax is the interplay between the Metrik and Memtrix tracks, where I use a reverb/filter juggle to sneak in the Bring It Like That sweeps into Ic Yr Pain’s drop section. That then transitions into Emily Makis’ nasty groove that I picked specifically so I could scratch. Too bad I couldn’t figure out how the CDJ and mixer worked that night and everybody saw me frozen and confused.
I transition from DnB into j-core with a harmonic mix between All I Need into Quon. If I can beatmatch it right, it’s perfect. The climax of the j-core section is Knight Rider. I try to quiet the trim on the previous song before jumping into Knight Rider’s intro to make it feel like it explodes. Not sure if that actually works though. It also depends on if I can time it right with the previous song.
The set ends with Oshama Scramble. I brought a milk juice box that night and tried to chug it to mimic Milk in the music video, who tries to chug milk and work out to get hot like her idol, Shama. In the last stretch of the song I put on some cat ears as my ‘transformation’ and dance it out.
I like to think DJing is about more than just curation and turntablism, but also performance. Got Milk made me interested in turning my sets into a sort of theater. Maybe I’m making a fool of myself, but I hope you’re having fun.
